Redneck Voters in White Settlement TX. Reject name change.

WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas (AP) — In the 1840s, a village of white pioneers sprang up amid several American Indian encampments. Its name, White Settlement, seemed fitting at the time.
Today, some city leaders argue the name is misleading and politically incorrect, hindering economic development in this 15,000-resident suburb of Fort Worth. The proposal has angered many residents who believe the change is unnecessary and would cost too much. Signs have popped up in store windows urging folks to “Be Proud! Don’t Let Them Discard the Heritage of White Settlement.
In recent years the city’s sales tax revenues have taken a hit with the departure of several big businesses — including Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores — and some argue the town’s name has prevented new businesses from coming to town to fill the gaps.
“It raises a red flag,” said Grant Jackson, a White Settlement Chamber of Commerce vice president. “Texas has kind of a redneck image, cowboys and everything rough and tough, so a politically incorrect-sounding name is more apt to take wings when it’s part of Texas.”
The city is about 86 percent white, according to 2000 U.S. Census figures. Residents on both sides of the name-change issue say it hasn’t had a reputation for racism.
But some black newcomers say they have felt shunned. New Orleans residents Adrienne Hansberry, her boyfriend, Clarence Goods, and a dozen of their relatives recently were brought to the area after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
“When I heard that we’d be going to White Settlement, I was like, ’I don’t think I want to move there,’ “ Hansberry said. “We are decent citizens, but we haven’t been treated like that.”
Goods said their apartment neighbors — most of them white but also some Hispanics — have been moving out in droves, some in the middle of the night. The couple also said they know of other hurricane refugees of various races who have felt unwelcome in several communities.
If the name change is approved, the city would spend about $25,000 initially to revise the name on police cars, uniforms and legal documents, Mayor James Ouzts said.
In one of the area's most contentious elections Tuesday, voters shot down a proposal to change the city's name to West Settlement. City officials worried that the current name – dating back to when the area was a white settlement surrounded by American Indian villages – could put off some businesses.
"There was such a rabid response from Mr. Price and others, some people who support it decided to let it alone in terms of promoting it," he said. "They'd just as soon not publicly debate those who are against it."
Ouzts said he received hate mail, e-mails, phone calls and verbal threats, both local and long distance, over his support of the name change. Mayor Pro Tem Steve Thompson said he believes his house was egged several times because of his stance on the name change.
Price acknowledges that the election has been heated, but denies that he or other name-change opponents have threatened city leaders.
"That's why you have an election -- so you can vote yes or no," he said. "You don't go out and attack a person or property."
But Ouzts and Price are on the same side on one issue. Both declined offers to appear on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
"I told the lady I considered this a local matter," Ouzts said. "The citizens would make their decision, and I'd live with that. I wasn't interested in debating Mr. Price."
Price agreed.
"I told them I'm not going to let you folks come in and make a joke out of our town," he said. "Our town is serious about this issue, and we don't want to be laughed at."

Someone needs to rip the masks off of them and shame them for their gross superiority complex.
When does a name of a town define who the people are that live in it?
I have lived all over the world...no matter what there is always going to be something, someone, someplace that doesn't sit well with you. Let the people vote..then be done with it. Remember it is just a name. History is about knowledge you do not have to change it just because you can't deal with it. Use it...
Exactly , if the meaning of the name is in the past , then why not change the name of the town to reprosent where the town is now ?
Many people in the (89% white) city of white settlement feel the town has a proud heritage , then that sais alot about who those people are for feeling pride in the fact that their ancesters wiped out all the indians in the area(how many native americans are still in DFW).
white settlement at that time was one of the few cities in this area (Ft.Worth was not a city then, it was an army post).
And yes the name does hurt the city because a company that knows little about the area as it is today would think twice about setting up shop in a place called white settlement , so maybe they shot themselves in the foot.
I just don't believe in changing a name of a town because of those reasons...you're wiping out history by doing that. A lot of our history is not pretty and is a reminder to not repeat it. Yes, if the people as a whole want to vote and change it that's fine. People from another time and place wiped out the majority of our "Indian Nation"...not just people in white settlement. If this is the issue of racism you can not clear a slate by erasing a name. You have this in every country, state, city, town it's everywhere with every culture. Racism is everywhere….yes, it’s sick, wrong and demented but it's sadly a part of life. as far as businesses...please I know politics and a name of a town is not the only reason they are not setting up shop...it's a great tool for people in the town to make a name for themselves for the future of politics...but taking a name away...trust me if they change the name you still won't see a rise in businesses just for that reason.
I find it cowardly that these 'grown men' have to have masks.
Usually when people wear masks....they are hiding. [insert rolling eyes smiley here]

Get your facts right. Why are you showing KKK.??? They have NOTHING to do with White Settlement! I was born & raised here. You? Your are the Racist. You have no right to come here & bash the population, They spoke when they voted
Why don't you do some research before you just start calling everyone in white settlement a bunch of rednecks. We know where we came from and we shouldn't have to change the name of a town because of who lives here now..its about history so why change history. We can't change what happened in this small town but we can affect what will happen in the future. So i think it's good that we didn't change the name. Oh and apparently we are racist if we call an african american black but it's perfectly fine for ya'll to call a caucasion person cracker or redneck..that's messed up.
The funny thing about this is; freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, freedom of ignorance is not. Our country in general has many trails and errors, all we learn from but to scowl a city now for something hundreds of years ago is absurd. I just bought a house there, very nice on the west side of 30 and not once have I been shunned or worried about problems. Racism nowadays comes from people like you Mortalez and of course the hysterical comment of Jessica, people who use race as an excuse. If something in this town were going on now to deliver the ideas that you presume(i.e.. your KKK presumption) then it would be dealt with legally. The ignorant problems we face now will never die do to people like you, harboring something that shouldnt exist anymore. And before you respond with another white wise crack or redneck reference, I have a PH.d and not to mention, I am mulatto. If you do not know what that word means, look it up, learn about what true racism is.

Why don't white indian huggers and mexican "indians" go live with the real indians then? Liars!
Follow up to Mortalez ignorance:
The city of White settlement was named because there were 7 Indian reservations around then in the area. The White settlement camp was made to protect the pioneers coming in. Another place was made nearby with the same intentions. What was it called? Fort Worth, an actual Fort to protect the settlers and pioneers. Are you going to move away now from there or go to city congress to change their name now? What an idiot. All this crap from a typical you know what, with ignorant racist opinions, but oh yea, he loves exotic women. You are a disgrace to all races and men.
and to DD: are you really trying to educate latinos or just use another excuse for racism? Legalize all immigrants? Is that what we need? Is that what our ancestors fought and stood for? I have an idea for you; go to Mexico City illegally, go straight to the city govt. Demand insurance, demand healthcare, demand rights, demand welfare, demand free everything, then when they say no, if they don't deport you first, stand outside and pickett or do a boycott. Your family will attend your funeral if they hear of it. I do believe all our latino friends and family deserve a chance at a better life, but the legal way and moral way. My family did it coming from Guatemala. Teach that on your website instead of a biased opinion.
